veterinary experiential learning programme
Empowering Animal Health Professionals Through Behavioral Science
“From horses, we may learn not only about the horse itself but also about animals in general, indeed about ourselves and about life as a whole.”
George Simpson
Who it's for
This immersive educational journey has been crafted for the dedicated professionals and enthusiasts in the field of animal health and welfare. This programme is the pinnacle of hands-on learning, specifically designed for veterinary students, newly qualified vets, vet nurses, vet technicians, stud farm workers, animal husbandry specialists and animal healthcare providers.
To provide a well-rounded experience, our program also includes modules on dairy cows and sheep. Participants will gain firsthand experience with these animals, allowing for the application of cooperative care principles across different species.
This programme is led by Dr Marie Lavrut (English & German speaking) and equine behavioural specialist, Cornelia Scholtz (English & Afrikaans speaking).
About
dr Marie lavrut
Surrounded by horses from a young age, Dr Marie Lavrut has always been fascinated by the different personalities of horses and how differently they interact with one another as well as humans.
She visited Holistic Horse Academy in 2014, and learned a great deal about natural herd behaviour and body language of horses in their natural habitat.
In 2016, Dr Lavrut began her studies in veterinary medicine and graduated in 2022 with a specific focus on ruminants and horses.
She believes that newly qualified veterinary professionals and even students would greatly benefit from an immersive learning experience where they have hands on practical exposure as well as understand behavioural signals and cooperative care. This belief led her to set up this programme in partnership with equine behavioural specialist, Cornelia Scholtz.
Our program is intricately tailored to foster a deep understanding of equine communication, advanced body language, and science-based behavioral problem-solving. We believe in the power of cooperative care—a compassionate and enlightened approach to animal handling that benefits both caretakers and animals alike.
This programme is led by Dr Marie Lavrut and equine behavioural specialist, Cornelia Scholtz. The first two weeks will be spent with Cornelia Scholtz where participants will learn about language signs, calming signals, and Polyvagal theory. After these two weeks, Dr Marie Lavrut and Cornelia will lead the final three weeks of the programme together.
- Improved Safety: Reducing stress for both animals and handlers minimizes the risks of injury, creating a safer environment for all.
- Enhanced Welfare: An animal that is an active participant in its care experiences less stress, promoting better overall health and well-being.
- Stronger Bonds: Establishing trust between humans and animals leads to more effective care and a more rewarding experience for caregivers.
- Effective Communication: Learning the subtle cues of animal body language allows for early detection of issues and more successful interventions.
While the Veterinary Experiential Learning Program encompasses vital knowledge applicable to various species, our heart lies with the equine world. Horses, with their nuanced communication and complex social structures, provide a rich canvas for applying the principles of behavioral science and the polyvagal theory.
Polyvagal Theory is a revolutionary approach to understanding animal behavior, which emphasizes the role of the nervous system in shaping the responses and interactions of animals. By integrating this theory, our program allows participants to achieve a profound connection with horses, gaining insight into their emotional and physiological states.
